Creating an Inclusive Teaching Plan

There are six general standards of an inclusive teaching plan:

  1. Faculty Awareness
  2. Learning Environment
  3. Course Overview and Syllabus
  4. Instructional Materials
  5. Assessment
  6. Instructional Strategies

Faculty Awareness

Faculty awareness involves a deliberate exploration of implicit biases through methods such as self-assessment, seeking feedback, and engaging in reflective journaling. It also involves consciously avoiding stereotypical assumptions and being vigilant to recognize and address any inequities that may arise within the classroom. Through continuous reflection and proactive measures, faculty can enhance their awareness and create an environment conducive to equitable learning opportunities for all students.

Inclusive Learning Environment

An inclusive learning environment is cultivated by establishing clear guidelines for respectful and equitable interaction right from the start of the course. This foundation encourages inclusive and respectful class discussions where diverse perspectives are valued and encouraged. Promoting collaborative work and facilitating cross-cultural communication enhances understanding and empathy among students from different backgrounds. It is also essential to promptly address invisible barriers to equity, ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to succeed and participate fully in the learning process. By actively creating such an environment, every student can feel respected and supported in the classroom.

Course Overview and Syllabus

A comprehensive course overview and syllabus begins with detailed information about office hours, expectations for student preparation, and how to engage with course materials effectively. Clear communication of course expectations and norms for respectful interactions ensures a respectful and inclusive classroom atmosphere. Including a diversity statement and discussing it with students underscores the commitment to equity and inclusion. Fair accommodation of religious observations and disabilities is crucial, demonstrating sensitivity and ensuring all students can fully participate. Together, these elements create a structured and supportive framework that promotes student engagement, learning, and success.

Inclusive Instructional Materials

Inclusive instructional materials include diverse perspectives and voices. This approach ensures that the learning materials reflect varied experiences and backgrounds without marginalizing any group. It is important to inform students of any limitations in the content and actively encourage critique and discussion. By fostering an environment where different viewpoints are respected and explored, educators promote critical thinking and deeper understanding among students.

Assessment and Feedback

In designing assessments and providing feedback, it is crucial to offer students multiple avenues to demonstrate their learning. This approach accommodates diverse learning styles and preferences, ensuring a more inclusive evaluation process. Clear explanation of evaluation criteria helps students understand what is expected and how their work will be assessed. Additionally, considering blind grading practices can mitigate biases, focusing solely on the quality of the work rather than personal factors. By implementing these strategies, educators create a fair and supportive assessment process.

Instructional Strategies

By incorporating insights from scholarly literature on inclusive teaching practices, instructors can cultivate a learning environment that values diversity and promotes equity. Effective instructional strategies are continually refined through self-assessment, enabling educators to reflect on their methods and adjust them to better meet student needs. Additionally, educators prepare to manage conflicts that may arise from differing viewpoints or experiences sensitively and constructively, fostering a respectful classroom climate conducive to open dialogue and learning. These strategies not only enhance the quality of education but also empower students to thrive in an inclusive and supportive educational setting.
