Adjunct Faculty Teaching Hub
Adjunct faculty are essential to the teaching mission of Virginia Tech, bringing real-world expertise and diverse professional backgrounds into the classroom. We recognize, however, that adjunct instructors often face unique challenges in accessing teaching-related professional development—whether due to variable schedules, remote locations, or other commitments.
To help meet these needs, CETL offers a range of flexible, accessible professional development opportunities designed specifically with adjunct faculty in mind. These resources aim to support effective teaching, foster connection, and build long-term, sustainable support for our adjunct community. In addition to the below adjunct focused opportunities, all CETL designed and offered professional development opportunities are open to adjunct faculty. Please see our programs and services websites for more information or email teaching@vt.edu with any questions.

The Adjunct Faculty Teaching Certificate Program
Great teaching doesn't happen by accident—and you don't have to figure it out alone.
Whether you're teaching your first course at Virginia Tech or you've been sharing your expertise with students for years, the Adjunct Faculty Teaching Certificate is designed to support your continued growth as an educator.
Developed in collaboration with Virginia Tech adjunct faculty, this new self-paced online certificate recognizes the unique experiences, strengths, and needs of adjunct instructors. Through engaging modules, practical resources, and evidence-based teaching strategies, you'll build confidence in creating meaningful learning experiences for your students—wherever you teach.
Throughout the certificate, you'll explore how to:
- Create an engaging and inclusive learning environment.
- Design effective assessments and provide meaningful feedback.
- Motivate students using active learning strategies grounded in learning science.
- Enhance your teaching with Canvas, Zoom, accessibility practices, and other instructional technologies.
- Connect with Virginia Tech's teaching and learning support units for continued professional development.
The program includes five self-paced modules that guide you from foundational teaching practices through instructional technology and ongoing professional development opportunities across the university. To earn the certificate, participants complete all module assignments and participate in one additional professional development opportunity offered by a Virginia Tech support unit.
As a certificate recipient, you'll not only leave with practical strategies you can apply immediately in your teaching—you'll also be recognized at Virginia Tech's annual Recognition of Teaching Excellence celebration alongside faculty colleagues and university leadership.
Whether you're looking to refresh your teaching, discover new ideas, or become more connected to the Virginia Tech teaching community, this certificate is a great place to begin. We look forward to learning with you!
