From the very beginning, when I walk into the classroom on the first day, I say, 'Howdy.' More often than not, without being prompted, I get a big “Howdy” in response. I do that because I want to set the stage that I don’t want to be the only one talking. And when you care, even if it’s just for a few minutes at the beginning of class, and they get to talk, you’re already creating that sort of culture that this is going to be back and forth.
